IGCSE exams

Every year, at the Lycée Jean Rostand in Chantilly, our 2nde students sit their IGCSEs. So what are IGCSEs and why do our students sit them?

What are IGCSEs?

IGCSEs (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) are exams equivalent to those that students in England and Wales take at the age of 16. The exams are graded from A* (the highest) through to U (ungraded) with the pass mark being a Grade D. If a student passes at Grade C or above they are considered to read, write and speak at a level equivalent to someone educated in the UK. IGCSEs can be taken in any subject, but at the Lycée Jean Rostand we offer First Language English and English Literature. Various examining bodies in the UK run the IGCSEs – ours are organised by Cambridge, which has been an established examining board for over a hundred years.

Why take IGCSEs?

The exams are not compulsory, but we follow the IGCSE syllabus in 3e and 2nde as teachers feel it is good preparation for the OIB (Option International Baccalaureate) that many of our students take in 1ère and Terminale in the International Section at the Lycée Jean Rostand. It also has other advantages:
• The Cambridge IGCSE is an internationally recognised exam
• It can replace the TOEFL/ IELTS language exams required for entry to UK universities

Success for our Students

Over the years the APARC Exam Centre, which is run in conjunction with the Lycée Jean Rostand, has had outsandingly good results. This year has been no exception! All of the 27 candidates who took the First Language English IGCSE passed. Eight students obtained an A grade, including four A* grades (over 90%). Fourteen students took and passed the IGCSE English Literature exam, with five students passing with A or A* grades. Special mention should go to Hassan Ahamed and Kealan Jones who achieved the ultimate goal of two A* grades!

Volunteers

I would like to offer my thanks to all the members of APARC who volunteer to help with the exam centre. Without people to help set up the exam rooms, invigilate the exams and assist with the paperwork we would not be able to offer such a valuable service to our students!
