APARC

APARC is a non-profit making association employing qualified teachers to provide English classes for bilingual children up to IGCSE level and it is run BY parents FOR parents. With the exception of teaching staff and classroom assistants, all other posts are held by APARC committee members on a voluntary basis. All teachers have English as their mother tongue. There are currently 150-155 children in APARC English classes.

How does APARC spend its money?

Parents may not be aware that APARC does not receive outside funding. As such every cent received really is crucial and APARC would like parents to understand that all the tuition fees received go directly toward payment of salaries of the teaching staff, teaching materials in school, library books and administrative costs. APARC makes every attempt to put the maximum amount of money back into the APARC education loop exclusively for the benefit of the APARC children.

As such, any shortfall of funds directly affects all resources available and is detrimental to all who benefit from the Association.

Members receive full accounts information every year at the Annual General Meeting and at this meeting members also approve a budget.

The APARC fees are calculated on the basis of three full school terms.

At the beginning of each year you are invited to choose between paying the annual fees by cheque in one lump sum or by 10 equal monthly instalments. These are then taken automatically from your bank.

Pre-school and primary classes take place on Wednesday afternoons at the Bois St Denis Primary school in Chantilly.
The times are:

AgeClassTime
5-6Kindergarten (Grande Section, Maternelle)13:30 to 16:00
6-7CP13:30 to 16:00

10-11CM213:30 to 16:00

Requirements to join Classes:
  • The family must be a member of APARC.
  • Pupils are expected to be good enough in English to participate actively at the appropriate class level in all areas of the curriculum. They also need to have some knowledge of the cultural background of an English-speaking country. In order for their proficiency to be maintained, it is essential that English be spoken at home on a regular (i.e. daily) basis.
  • Children entering the APARC structure in Kindergarten or CP will be assessed, within the classroom situation, by attending for one month, the dates having been previously arranged by the coordinator and teacher concerned.
  • New pupils, planning to enter the Primary classes in CE1 and CE2 are assessed during the course of one morning in reading, writing and oral work. In CM1 or CM2, a more formal test is sat during the course of one afternoon, and their oral level is assessed through an informal discussion between the teacher and pupil.
  • A non-refundable assessment fee of €60 is charged for one day assessments. Assessments that last one month will be charged at the weekly rate for attending school.
  • The Primary/Kindergarten coordinator should be approached in the first instance.

Class Content

Pre-School classes offer pre-reading activities, which include nursery rhymes, stories, songs, practical activities and role-play.

Primary classes introduce reading, writing and self-expression in English. In CE1, the main focus is on teaching the children to read, the formation of basic sentences, spelling and the development of vocabulary through discussion work. In CE2, the focus turns towards writing: sentences are developed and the children get to express themselves through creative writing activities. In CM1, the pupils are encouraged to structure their work through the introduction of paragraphs and their understanding of what they read is developed through reading comprehension activities. Finally, in CM2, all aspects of the curriculum are consolidated as the children prepare for the move to Collège.

Homework

All teachers give homework of some form or another. This ranges from relatively simple activities such as learning key words in CP to much more complex pieces of writing (stories and poems) in CM1/CM2. From CP onwards parents are encouraged to her their children read on a regular basis, either using books from home or from books borrowed from the school library.

Primary Library

APARC has a fantastic range of library books! For structured reading, we use the Oxford Reading Tree series that ranges from pre-reading picture books right through to level 10+ reading books that children should be reading in CM2. Alongside this we have our “free-reading” section, which contains a range of fiction, factual and poetry books that have been graded by our library staff to tie in with the different levels of the reading scheme. Children from CP upwards are able to visit the library every week to change their books and to read aloud. Kindergarten children have their own set of books within their classroom that they may choose from on a regular basis. APARC employs a full-time librarian and assistant librarian to ensure the smooth running of the library, but we also rely on parent volunteers to ensure that children are heard read on a regular basis. If you would like to volunteer, then please contact a member of staff.

Collège

Collège

APARC Classes at the Collège

Secondary classes are integrated into the timetable of the Collège Des Bourgognes in Chantilly. The pupils have 4 hours per week of Anglophone classes plus additional library sessions, timetables permitting. APARC has a very good relationship with the Collège and our pupils are (generally) seen to be serious, motivated students that teachers enjoy having in their classes.

Within the Anglophone Section pupils continue to develop their reading, writing, self-expression and grammar skills. In addition to this, pupils are given some background, that is to say an introduction, to the geography and history of the English-speaking world. Specific attention is paid to reinforcing their English vocabulary (which at this stage typically lags behind their French vocabulary) by studying current affairs and modern literature.

In 6ème and 5ème, APARC pupils have 4 additional hours hours in their timetable for “anglais pour Anglophones”. These four hours are on top of their normal schedule, but are spread over the week. The first foreign language (LV1) is currently German. APARC pupils are also encouraged to join the “section européenne – allemande”, which means that 2 extra hours of German are taught (German culture and everyday life). This ensures that pupils remain in the same classes throughout their time at Collège. The 4 hours of anglophone include 2 hours of Language, 1 hour of Literature and 1 hour of Social Sciences (History/geography).

In 4ème and 3ème, “anglais pour Anglophones” becomes APARC pupils' second foreign language (LV 2), when the other pupils of their class choose either English, Spanish, or Italian. Thus, they only have one extra hour over and above the standard Collège timetable. The content of the lessons changes slightly as they no longer have Social Sciences, but instead have two hours of Literature per week. In 3ème, the students begin the two-year curriculum that leads to the IGCSE in literature and language.

From 6ème onwards it becomes more difficult for newcomers to integrate into the APARC structure unless the students are bilingual (French/English) and from 5ème there is the added problem that the APARC students have studied German as their foreign language and, after 6 hours a week for a year, they have already attained quite a high level. Exceptions are possible and there is a written test for each level, followed by an interview with the APARC Head Teacher and the French Principal of the Collège for any potential candidates who have successfully completed the written entry tests. A non-refundable assessment fee of €60 is charged. The Collège Coordinator should be approached in the first instance.

Requirements to join Classes
  • The family must be a member of APARC.
  • Secondary school students must either live in the catchment area for Collège des Bourgognes (6ème to 3ème) and Lycée Jean Rostand (2nde to Terminale), or ask for a 'dérogation' (dispensation).

Lycée

Lycée

APARC in the Lycée

APARC no longer functions in the Lycée as a private school. Instead, pupils are integrated into the British International Secion. In order to do this, the pupils must pass an entrance test at the end of 3e (see below) that is taken by anyone wanting to opt into the section i.e. pupils not from the Collège des Bourgognes are also able to apply.

During the course of 2nde, pupils will study towards IGCSE English Language and Literature (the Literature IGCSE is not an option for students who do not come from the College des Bourgognes as they will have missed half the curriculum but they will continue to study the syllabus as this is good preparation for the OIB – see below). The students have four hours of English per week, split equally between Language and Literature, plus two hours of Geography/History in English per week. The IGCSE is usually taken in May. Results are known in mid-August.

In 1ère and Terminale, the students work towards their Option International Baccalaureate (OIB) which is taken as part of their General S/ES/L Baccalaureate. They have four hours of English Literature per week, as well as continuing the two hours of History/Geography in English. At the end of Terminale, the students take a four-hour written test plus a 30-minute oral test in English Literature and a four-hour written test plus a 20- minute oral test in History/Geography (In History/Geography, pupils can choose to take the written test in French, but they must take the oral test in English!).

Entrance Test

For entrance into the International Section at the lycée, the students must pass an entrance test at the end of 3ème. This comprises a one hour written test in English and a 20 minute oral test in English. Pupils coming directly from an English-speaking country may also be tested on their French – this is at the Lycée’s discretion. Pupils are also asked to provide copies of their most recent reports. As the International Section requires such a large amount of additional work, pupils may be refused entry if their marks in other subjects are not high enough. Likewise, discipline issues, as noted on the reports, may also be taken into consideration. The International Section is state funded and therefore no entrance test fee or tuition fee is charged.
